Ancestral Lands - A map of the Yurok Ancestral Lands is available at this link (map). The Yurok Tribe’s traditional territory stretched unbroken along the Pacific Ocean from Damnation Creek, its northern boundy to the the Little River drainage basin, its southern boundry and along both sides of the Klamath River to and including the Bluff Creek drainage basin. Located in a very rural area over 70% of the Yurok Reservation has no access to basic telephone or electricity services.
Su-Mey Village located at Patrick’s Point State Park. Visit the recreated Yurok seasonal village - "Su-Mey" - consisting of traditional style family houses, a sweathouse, changing houses, a redwood canoe, and a dance house. The village is used by the local Yurok community for education of their youth and to share their culture with the public. Yearly celebrations are held here and many school groups visit the village when they study California history.

Su-Mey Village was planned and built by the Yurok people working with local park staff. Modern amenities include a nearby parking area, a covered cook shelter, and picnic tables. All of these structures are made from boards split from redwood trees that have fallen in north coast state parks. Stone and other local materials were also used in the structures.
Although the Yurok people had permanent village sites north and south of Patrick's Point, this area was used primarily as a seasonal encampment. The name "Su-Mey" is a place name for the Patrick's Point area. The village is open every day to the public. Adjacent to Sumêg Village is a native plant garden where you will find native plants that were used for baskets, food and medicine.
. – (part of the Coastal Trail) This beautiful 4 mile hike follows coastal bluffs to Lagoon Creek. Turn West from Highway 101 onto Requa Road to get started.
– Klamath Beach Drive is a dirt road and has an alternate route for trailers and RV’s at Alder Camp Road (see map). Enjoy unobstructed views of the mouth of the Klamath and the ocean below at several overlooks. At one overlook, a trail leads to a World War II-era Radar station disguised as a farmhouse and barn. Eight miles down the road you will connect with the Newton B. Drury Scenic Byway in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, home to a resident herd of Roosevelt Elk.
– Fern Canyon is spectacular and well worth the hike. It is a very narrow, very steep canyon, covered in lush ferns. Park in the parking lot and start following the creek upstream. After a few bends of the stream, the canyon gets extremely narrow and extremely green. Make sure you stop and listen to the birds and the water, while you stand in the middle of the canyon, between two cliff faces covered in ferns.
Drive on Davison Road, following the signs to Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Campground. This is a very narrow dirt road, so no trailers are allowed. When the road reaches the beach, take it all the way to the end. There is a campground and a trailhead, pointing the way to Fern Canyon.
Heading North on US 101, turn left onto Davison Road, about 3 miles North of Orick. Heading South on US 101, turn right onto Davison Road, about 2 miles South of Prairie Creek Visitor Center.
As settlers came to the area to work in the logging industry strife grew between the newcomers and the indigenous people. Fort Ter-Wer was built in 1857 to house army personnel stationed there to keep peace between the settlers and Native Americans. The fort was destroyed by flood in 1861 but it was not abandoned until later in 1862. To get to Fort Ter-Wer, take the highway 169 exit off of Highway 101, also known as the Ter-Wer Valley exit and take Ter-Wer Rifle Rd to the fort.
